Peck'ish Chickens

Whether you have backyard birds or are a poultry producer, choosing a ration for chickens is a concern that greatly impacts egg production. Let Heartland Feeds help you with that.

Every diet is simplest with a basic complete pellet. These are formulated with vitamins, minerals, and proper nutrition densities. We carry two options in-store; crumbled pellet ration or a mash, which means you can see the grains and seeds.

Feeding a layer ration is best suited for after 20 weeks of age or after the first egg is laid. Layer ration contains high calcium and protein to ensure quality egg production. The broiler or growing ration is high in protein but usually contains around 1.2% calcium compared to layer at 2.5-3.5% calcium. Feeding a high calcium ration to a young bird can cause kidney damage as the organ cannot support that concentration in the blood.

Feeding oyster shells or a calcium supplement is a common additive to a laying hen diet. Weak egg shells are usually due to low calcium levels. It is best to check a few egg shells for thickness before adding in oyster shell. Oyster shell is best fed as a free choice supplement.
